India has a vast railway network. It is also one of the oldest railway networks in the world. Traveling by train is the best mode of transport, as it is the most enjoyable journey. India has also introduced some semi-high speed trains like Gatimaan Express with a maximum speed of upto 160 km/hr and Spanish Talgo Train with a maximum speed of 180 km/hr. Today, we will tell you about the fastest trains in India.

1. Gatimaan Express, 12049/50

Gatimaan Express is India's first semi-high speed train that runs between Delhi and Agra. It operates at a maximum speed of 160 km/hr (99 mph) and is currently the fastest train in India. The train takes 100 minutes to cover the 188 km (117 mi) journey from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantonment railway stations which gives the average speed of 113 km/hr (70 mph).


2. New Delhi - Bhopal Shatabdi Express, 12002

The Bhopal Shatabdi is the fastest train in India with the top speed of 155 km/hr on New Delhi-Agra stretch. New Delhi Habibganj Shatabdi Express connect metro and major tourist cities like New Delhi, Gwalior and Bhopal for pilgrimage and business.


3. Mumbai - New Delhi Rajdhani Express, 12951/52

Mumbai Rajdhani Express is a super fast express train, runs between Mumbai to Delhi and the fastest Rajdhani train of India. The Rajdhanis trains are one of the fastest trains in India along with Shatabdi and Duronto Express. Earlier, it used to cover the distance of 1385 kilometers in each direction in about 19 hours and 5 minutes. However, after the electrification of the route, the train has improved its speed and now it takes 15 hours 50 minutes at an average speed of 90.46 km/hr (excluding halts).


4. Sealdah - New Delhi Duronto, 12259/60

It is a non stop train connecting West Bengal to national capital New Delhi. There are no technical halts in the train journey. It runs at maximum speed 140 km/hr while average speed is between 85 and 90 km/hr.


5. New Delhi - Kanpur Shatabdi Express, 12034

Kanpur New Delhi Shatabdi Express is the second Shatabdi Express Train for Kanpur Central, Lucknow Swarna Shatabdi Express being the first one. It is called as Kanpur Reverse Shatabdi because of reverse time table of Lucknow Shatabdi Express. It runs at maximum speed 140 km/hr while average speed is between 85 and 90 km/hr.


6. New Delhi - Howrah Rajdhani Express, 12302

The Howrah Rajdhani Express was first introduced in 1969 and left New Delhi station for Howrah station to cover a distance of 1,445 km in 17 hours 20 minutes. It runs with an average speed of 88.21 km/hr. It runs at maximum speed 135 km/hr while average speed is between 80 and 85 km/hr.


7. New Delhi - Howrah Duronto Express, 12273

This train belongs to the Eastern Zone of Indian Railways and it uses the Grand Chord route. It is one of the fastest trains on this route. This train is fully accommodated with the latest Hybrid-LHB Coaches. It covers a distance of 1,441 kilometers in 17 hours and 10 minutes and its average speed is 87.06 km/hr. It runs at maximum speed 130 km/hr while average speed is between 80 and 85 km/hr.


8. New Delhi - Allahabad Duronto Express, 12276

The Allahabad Duronto Express is a superfast express train of the Indian Railways connecting New Delhi to Allahabad Junction and it had its first inaugural run in 2012. It runs at maximum speed 130 km/hr while average speed is between 80 and 85 km/hr.


9. Sealdah - New Delhi Rajdhani Express, 12313

The Sealdah Rajdhani Express connects Sealdah station of Kolkata to Delhi and is the second fastest train on the Sealdah-Delhi sector after Sealdah Duronto Express. Sealdah Rajdhani Express train is regularly hauled by a WAP 7 locomotive, a High Speed locomotive developed by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works. The average speed of this train is 87.06 km/hr and it covers a distance of 1458 kilometers in 17 hours and 30 minute.


10. Nizamuddin - Bandra Garib Rath, 12910

Mumbai Bandra T-Hazrat Nizamuddin Garib Rath Express is a fastest express train of the Garib Rath category,runs between Bandra Terminus and Hazrat Nizamuddin. The maximum speed of Garib Rath trains is around 130 kmph, and it covers a distance of 1,366 kilometers in 16 hours and 30 minutes.
